GROHE 30189000 Ambi Kitchen Tap : Nearly there, one flaw.

This is a great tap: the design is elegant and it is a delight to use. The levers literally glide from closed to open. It is quite heavy and does shake a little on a standard stainless steel sink, even with the plastic plate fitted underneath, but that is a very small price to pay for such a nice fitting. I bought the suggested grohe compression adaptors to allow me to connect this tap to 15mm copper pipe. After a bit of work (and a change of olive in one case) they did the job.

Great tap but need 3/8in – 15mm convertor and monoblock spanner. On the positive side these are superbly well-made taps – silky smooth control – from the tiniest drip (my cats like that) through to full flow – very controllable with the lightest touch – also controllable with your wrist or elbow if you’ve got mucky hands. Also the leaf to right swivel is like silk – you can more the tap with the lightest touch of your little finger. I like the design of the swivel – they supply some grease – you lubricate and fit the spout into the base – so the spout sort of moves independently of the base – my previous tap (also a grohe – lasted 10 years or so – was a bad design because the swivel bit sort of connected to the base and got loose underneath the sink now and then you had to fiddle about mending it – this is a much better design). However, this is german and charmingly german plumbers still use ‘imperial’ measurements – the tap tails connect to 3/8in – so you need to get item no. B01ejy5p8y – this will convert the tap tail to 15mm and make your diy life a lot easier. You will also need plumber’s tape and use the original washers that come with the tap. After that you can just use standard push-fit 15mm kit. Definitely get the 3/8in – 15mm convertor – about a fiver – you can do this with straight reducers – i tried that first time around – a nightmare. You also need a monoblock spanner to tighten the tap onto your sink – try b0015nstu4 – however, now all done the tap is lovely – real quality – but you need to get the convertor and spanner.

Wrong side hot and cold taps. Beautiful tap with lovely smooth action but we had the size connection problem that others have had, plus the hot / cold water connections are on the wrong sides and have to be plumbed in that way. Not the end of the world and i’m sure we’ll get used to it but it’s certainly not what i expected of this make and at this price.

Comments from buyers

“Quality issues as per other reviewers – Update: . but Grohe were quick to come out and fix, Tap is really nice quality with a smooth action when operated, Nearly there, one flaw.”

Compared to the old tap it replaced and some of the cheaper models tested at diy stores, the quality really shines through. Install was easy enough, but buy the connectors that amazon show as ‘often purchased with’. You will need them to connect to 15mm copper pipe and they are not easy to get elsewhere.

Very impressive kitchen tab , very elegant in the kitchen, quick delivery ,i like it.

Flex leads 18 inch long and mine needed need 15mm to 12mm coupling (srewfix 88346 *2) as flex pipes are about 10 mm wide bore.

  1. Excellent smooth operation, good manufacture. But replacing the tails looks an impossibility.

  2. This is a really nice looking, solid tap. This is a really nice looking, solid tap. Had a new kitchen fitted and this didn’t give the fitter any particular headaches. From looking around, it seems you can spend hundreds on very similar taps, but i don’t know why you’d bother when something like this is available for under a ton.

    1. Unfortunately the slot at the back of the tap that receives the retaining clamp was too small to accept the clamp, it is uneven and the clamp catches before engaging the upper part of the tap. I know every company can make the odd dud but replacing taps is a bit more hassle than just popping it back in the post. There’s a fair bit of wriggling underneath sinks. Thankfully i installed myself so didn’t need a plumber. The flaw would have needed two trips by one, as it is i am just inconvenienced by lost time and effort and not out of pocket. Edit updated review 14/04/17. I used a dremel to grind down the circlip and it fitted in with a bit of persuasion. Just as well i’m not the pernickety type.

    1. It has an excellent chrome finish. Fitted & ok so far after about a week. It has an excellent chrome finish. Hope it lasts much longer than the previous stainless steel coated franke tap, which stained badly after about 5 years. The new grohe tap easy to fit with the compression fittings.

    1. Have to agree with other comments that the hot tap doesn’t line up properly but am not that overly concerned.

I’ve had this tap a little over a year now and my only minor quibble was the fact that one of the handles had worked loose. However, after a very quick phone call to grohe’s tech dept, they told me this is perfectly normal and talked me through the incredibly simple procedure to tighten it up (in the process, i got to see the inside of the tap mechanism, which is just as beautiful as the outside) so add ‘superb aftercare and customer service’ to the list, and what we have here is a magnificent tap which outperforms any other tap i’ve ever fitted and which is a joy to have in my kitchen (and as a result of which, i have also now fitted grohe to my bath and sink too). Cannot recommend this brand enough.

      1. Awesome tap and looks the part. Awesome tap and looks the part. But due to size and weight, its a bit wobbly on a stainless steel sink. Probably better suited for a plastic one.

    1. Beautifully made tap, very smooth action. Works fine on standard uk mains water supply. It does need adaptors to connect to tails so warn your plumber in advance. A delight to use, almost makes washing up a pleasure.

Extremely happy with this double tap. It has now been in use over a year and shows no signs of wear. It was easy enough for my husband to fit although he is into his diy. Happy to recommend and proved good value for money.

Easy to fit (with adaptors for european thread size). Well made (german engineering), easy to fit (with adaptors for european thread size), and flow is very pleasing with an aerated look.

  15. Quality tap that looks great. I have bought a number of kitchen taps previously at a greater cost and the weight and quality of this tap is better if not comparable. It is sturdy in weight and the fixture/fittings supplied enable a simple diy job. The levers feel like quality and the tap is a big hit within the home. Please be aware that the connectors are smaller in size to my old franke taps, so adapters were required.

First of all for the uk, you need a 12mm to 15mm compression fitting, sometimes marketed as 15mm to 1/2 inch (not 3/4 or 5/8 inch). So ignore the amazon frequently brought together item as it is the wrong size. If you are predantic buy 12mm to 15mm or imperial 15/32 inch (half inch) to 19/32 (essentially 5/8 inch). It’s a nice heavy well-made european tap, not a tap for brexit-ers. I’ll update this comment when i have had more experience. My british bristan easyfit taps (same price) kept popping off and flooding the kitchen. So i brought these taps and apart from yodel delivery issues. The item is great, really solid and is the size described so it is big too. There’s a special grease that goes inside which makes the tap swivel effortlessly.
